  1. Thank you. So any hope in the face of this endless struggle is an illusion, and "bad faith". And as such would be irrational/absurd? It seems in his defiance and scorn for his fate S. transcends it, and finds happiness. (Takes courage). Why not joy.....what is the difference philosophically?

  2. I love your comment/question Phyllis ... I think that in the face of endless Irrationality/Absurdity of life some of us have the an invincible summer (survival instinct?)within us that propels us toward the transcendent spirit that is fueled by our Hope/Expectation of "Joy"

  3. Thanks Harry, for responding. Totally agree, plus I don't find life absurd, much as I understand the sense of futility experienced by those who do.
That is one of my favorite quotes.
Life is a mystery. I have found "joy" (rather than "happiness"?) in the most unlikely circumstances. Have thought of you and the wonderful work you do. Please keep safe!

  4. Hi Phyllis ...so sorry for the delay... have been busy with work ! I love !!!! the quote ! that Life is a Mystery ...
My favorite Poet E. Dickenson and one of my many favorite poems of this pioneer new Voice ... Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words And never stops at all... I love this poem !!! from someone who stayed at home most of her life ! A brilliant light she was and her legacy touches us today more then ever !!! Keep well and hope to see you soon !

  5. Strange you should mention E.D. Have also thought about her lately, in re lockdown. (Of course I am far more "isolated" than you are). She certainly found a well populated world within. Technology has made connecting with the outer world so easy now.....in fact I have ZOOM overload. (This morning a lecture on Morocco, this afternoon on Ecology). Still, Hope IS the Thing with Feathers! And perhaps is best experienced when there is no noise or distraction. Hope we can meet in the Fall. In the meantime, please be well.

  6. Harry.....in case you ever look at this blog again. Remembered how we discussed watching Netflix movies (with Alan) before class, and thought I'd recommend one. "MERLI" (with an acute accent over the i). In Catalan with subtitles. A high school Philosophy professor in Barcelona. Fascinating! Am listening to Hope singing in my soul, (now that my voice in Chorus/Choir is mute!), and wishing you well.
